Mayor backs new Metropolitan Police Commissioner
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has welcomed the appointment of a new Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
Sir Paul Stephenson, who was already serving as Acting Commissioner, will assume the role after receiving the backing of both Mr Johnson and home secretary Jacqui Smith.
The mayor stated that the appointment will help lead to enhanced safety for residents, as priority will be given to tackling knife crime, violence and terrorism.
"I know he has the support of the troops and has shown his commitment to Londoners in a big way in his work to make London safer," remarked Mr Johnson, adding that Sir Paul will help build confidence in the force and "deliver commonsense policing".
Deputy mayor for policing Kit Malthouse also welcomed the decision, suggesting that it will help the police improve the quality of life for residents across the capital.
Earlier this month Mr Johnson appointed James Cleverly as ambassador for young people, with an emphasis placed on reducing youth crime.
