London police crack down on illegal cabs

In a move that may help improve public safety in London, police have announced the launch of a crackdown on illegal taxi services.

The force is seeking to curb the activities of taxi touts, who have been responsible for over 100 serious sex attacks on women in the past year.

Highlighting the issue, London mayor Boris Johnson said people should not risk spoiling Christmas by getting involved with unlicensed cab drivers.

He remarked: "I am resolute in my determination that this time of celebration and joy will not be marred by the despicable activities of the taxi touts who stain our city."

Last week saw the Metropolitan Police getting involved in another pre-Christmas campaign.

The force is helping to push the message in the Department for Transport anti-drink driving campaign THINK, emphasising that those who break the law this way face spending Christmas behind bars.
