Area Comments
From the stylishly eclectic shopping streets around Marylebone High Street, to the world renowned medical destination that is Harley Street to the restaurants and cafés of St Christopher's Place, Marylebone is truly a delight of London. Often held up as an example of modern urban village living, these 92 acres are carefully managed and nurtured by the Howard de Walden Estate.
Marylebone lies north of Oxford Street and South of Regents Park. Edgware Road forms the western boundary. Portland Place and Langham Place form the eastern boundary. As far as transport is concerned, you're probably best off either walking north from Bond Street tube or south from Baker Street.
The area looks like it is mainly residential, and while this is true there is plenty of stuff going on to excite the visitor. The Wallace Collection is a little-known gallery with a splendid collection including works by Rembrandt, Velazquez and Delacroix. O'Conor Dons is a long-established Irish pub with above-average food and drink on the ground floor, and a wonderful restaurant upstairs.
Marylebone is also home to the BBC's Broadcasting House, where the Beeb's national radio station programmes are recorded. There is the retail heaven of Oxford Street to the South and Regents Park sitting just to the north - if traffic and stress levels have risen to an unacceptable degree then this Royal Park is definitely one of the best places to pretend you're in the countryside. The Open-Air Theatre is also worth a look when the weather's good.
