Area Comments
"Borough" is so-called because many years ago it was the only borough of London that was actually outside the City walls. Originally settled by the Romans (who built the first London Bridge), it traditionally had a reputation as a bit of a "rough spot", as its many inns and pubs attracted plenty of unsavoury characters and felons.
However, the change in this now cultural quarter of London is huge. Attractions such as the Tate Modern, Globe Theatre and Borough Market have long-since transformed the complexion of this area. Indeed, the recent regeneration of Borough Market itself into an attractive retail destination typifies the type of inhabitant Borough can now boast.
It's proximity to the river, along with the large number of bars and restaurants that pepper the area mean that SE1 is now a highly sought after location in terms of property, nightlife and retail therapy.
