Area Comments

There are very few places more North London than Golders Green, but despite its fame, its resolute nature as an essential part of London, this remains a world apart in many ways.

Partly it's the geography. As the hills that border London blend downwards towards the north, Golders Green seems to flatten and descend gently, its main road splitting and confusing buses a little (though the traffic rarely reaches fever pitch). Local people are friendly, chatty, and the atmosphere is one of relaxed charm. Golders Green is known as a Jewish community, but in truth it's simply a very nice community to live in.

It's a truly excellent place for bars, shops and restaurants, Golders Green has one of the most varied pools of restaurants and probably the most cafes per square yard of any area of London. This is a place to meet, chat, shop, and chat some more. If you like your shopping a bit more hard-core, then Brent Cross is only a few minutes away. With Golders Hill Park and Hampstead Heath not far away, you're also spoilt for places to walk after a big lunch. It's also (with great transport) one of the easiest places in London to not own a car.

Housing in Golders Green is hugely varied, reflecting the different needs of the community and the large economic spread - and there are opportunities for almost anyone to be able to find a property that reflects their needs. Modern apartment blocks, set back from the wide streets, are a popular choice with the young professionals and couples. However there are less imposing ways to get a flat, with plenty of maisonettes and garden flats converted from larger properties as well. Houses tend towards the semi-detached, Edwardian and mid-war periods. There are however fantastic detached properties for sale, if you know where to look and act quickly enough to seize one of these most desirable properties.

Living in Golders Green is definitely a privilege, but a gentle and understated one. It's a stable, quite upmarket area - but one in which it's possible to find great places to live that fit almost anyone's budget.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.

While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.

Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.

You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.

There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
