Area Comments

A generally excellent suburb to live in, Edgware provides good access to the north as well as very good, large properties at reasonable prices.

Long a favourite with those looking for large family homes at good prices find a lot of other amenities in the Edgware area. There are plenty of shops both in the streets as well as in the local mall. High Street brands and smaller local traders exist side by side. There's a real character to Edgware that its locals enjoy - it feels cheerful and accepting, and as the area steps up in the world the café culture and good dining that the residents enjoy has taken off nicely - this is now a place of some high class restaurants popular with the locals. Set in the relatively open environs of the Brent/Harrow borders, this is a place stocked with parks and open spaces.

Edgware property is primarily the family home - there are large numbers of streets with great detached and semidetached houses. These are primarily 19th Century but there are a good deal of younger buildings. Many of the houses are done up in the half-timbered Mock Tudor style, a style of housing that provides excellent space in the main. Most of these houses provide good gardens and the area generally has wide streets, relatively uncluttered since many houses have offstreet parking. There are also apartments available, mainly in purpose-built blocks, with quite a few new built blocks of flats including some very modern, impressive developments in the town centre catering to the young professionals attracted out here by the lower prices for their square feet.

Always a good family choice with its large houses and gardens, Edgware is now providing homes for anyone interested in a great little community and good prices.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.

While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.

Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.

You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.

There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
